Our Commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
At the Komos Foundation, our mission aligns directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By transforming tequila byproducts into opportunities for education, innovation, and sustainability, we contribute to a more equitable and resilient future:
i.SDG 4: Quality Education – We expand access to Education through the construction of new classrooms and schools in underserved communities.
1. Target 4.1: By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.
a. We support this target by building classrooms and schoolhouses in underserved regions, giving children in Amatitán and La Cima access to secondary education.
ii. SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation – We prevent pollution of rivers and waterways, offering sustainable alternatives to common industry practices. We are also implementing wetland systems and liquid waste treatment solutions that reduce ecological pressure in our developments
1. Target 6.3: By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.
a. Our wetland systems and liquid waste treatment solutions reduce ecological pressure and provide tequila producers with alternatives to dumping vinazas into rivers and waterways.
iii. SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth – We create quality jobs by training builders and masons in bioconstruction, while offering workshops and internships that foster long-term skills and income growth.
1. Target 8.3: Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation…
a. In addition to creating dignified jobs through bioconstruction, we are helping shape the first-ever national normativa for adobe construction in Mexico, ensuring builders and masons can work under safe, regulated conditions that open doors to financing, insurance, and formal employment opportunities.
iv. SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure – By repurposing tequila byproducts into durable building materials, we innovate in both waste management and sustainable infrastructure development.
1. Target 9.4: By 2030, upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes.
a. We innovate by transforming tequila byproducts into adobe bricks for sustainable schools and infrastructure, reducing waste and rethinking industry practices.
v. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities – Our school projects, such La Cima’s middle school, uses upcycled materials and bioconstruction techniques to reduce carbon footprints, save water, reduce energy use, and build community resilience.
1. Target 11.3: By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries.
2. Target 11.6: By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.
a. Our projects, like the reconstruction of La Cima, use recycled and bioconstruction materials to lower carbon footprints, save water, and build resilient communities.
vi. SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production – We help the tequila industry adopt circular economy practices by ensuring responsible use of byproducts, turning waste into valuable community resources.
1. Target 12.2: By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
2. Target 12.5: By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
3. Target 12.6: Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.
a. We help tequila producers responsibly manage byproducts, prevent waste, and adopt circular economy practices that turn waste into resources for communities.
vii. SDG 13: Climate Action – Our bioconstruction methods reduce emissions associated with traditional waste disposal and lower energy use in new buildings.
1. Target 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.
a. By advancing a national normativa for adobe construction, we ensure that low-carbon, waste-reducing construction practices are not just experimental projects, but integrated into policy and regulation, helping Mexico move toward climate-resilient building at scale.
viii. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – We collaborate with tequila brands, distilleries, government agencies, universities, and local communities across Mexico to amplify impact and ensure shared progress.
1. Target 17.17: Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships, building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships.
a. We collaborate with tequila brands, distilleries, government agencies, universities, and communities across Mexico to achieve collective impact.
